This evidence review report was compiled between September 2024 and April 2025 by a researcher from the University of Surrey specialised in multilingual communication and translation. The objective of this report is to support the development of the Improvement framework for the commissioning of translation and interpretation services for the NHS (a document produced by the NHS South, Central and West Commissioning Support Unit team, led by Andrew Fenton). This report documents existing evidence of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) software and its language outputs for multilingual communication in healthcare, and extracts recommendations from this evidence.
