Abstract
A 20/30 MV Tandem Van de Graaff machine is about to begin regular operation at Daresbury in Cheshire. Some of the associated experimental facilities are described, with particular emphasis on those intended for the study of nuclei far from stability. Both a recoil separator and a mass separator are under construction, and their characteristics are discussed. Alternative, cheaper methods of studying nuclei far from stability are described. The results of some experiments, which make use of these techniques, on nuclei with
Z ∼
N ∼ 40, neutron-deficient Sn nuclei and neutron-deficient Yb nuclei are also discussed.
