Abstract
Advances in genetic testing techniques enabling rapid genetic testing and developments in cancer treatment have allowed genetic testing to be offered close to cancer diagnosis in order to inform cancer management. Identifying a genetic predisposition at cancer diagnosis and managing hereditary cancer raises issues for patients, families and health professionals in cancer care and genetics. This chapter will focus on the impact of identification of a cancer predisposing gene mutation on the clinical management of cancer, the psychological issues raised for patients who undergo genetic testing at cancer diagnosis and the practical challenges for health professionals in cancer care and genetics in managing the genetic testing of newly diagnosed cancer patients.
