Abstract

09 Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure Discrete Element Method Calibration CMA-ES
Sinkholes are a globally occurring geohazard caused by subsurface void collapse. The estimation of sinkhole formation probability is commonly carried out using hazard mapping techniques [1], however linking a given sinkhole hazard to structural vulnerability is underexplored. Therefore sinkhole-foundation interaction will be investigated using the discrete element method (DEM). A key challenge with this approach is producing calibrated DEM models with appropriate micro-mechanical properties. This is addressed through the development and implementation of an automated evolutionary strategy for macro to micro scale material calibration which enables the realistic replication and study of sinkhole structure interaction case-studies.
