Abstract
This chapter uses a business model framework (Baden-Fuller and Mangematin 2013) to analyze data collected through a survey and interview study with translation industry senior management on the topic of service diversification. It is inspired by the diversifying landscape of translation services analyzed in a previous study of LSP websites (Palmer and do Carmo forthcoming) and considers translation as inseparable from its wider context of practice. Only through understanding the full context in which translation services are delivered can we begin to understand situated translation practices in the modern production network (Abdallah and Koskinen 2007, Abdallah 2012) and its outsourcing model (Dunne 2012). In Olohan’s practice theory approach, “a differentiated offering of translation services may be understood not merely as a change in translation practice but as a set of substantial changes in a larger constellation of practices” (2021, 116).
