Expertise

Jonathan Williams is Professor of Banking and Finance at Surrey Business School. He is published in academic journals, such as the Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Financial Stability, and Regional Studies amongst others, and he has presented his research at institutions including The World Bank and Deutsche Bundesbank as well as at conferences and universities across the world.

Professor Williams is Chair of the European Association of Teachers of Banking and Finance (Wolpertinger Society), Treasurer of the Financial Markets and Institutions Special Interest Group of the British Accounting and Finance Association, member of the Chartered Banker Institute’s Quality and Standards Committee, and Series Editor for Palgrave Macmillan Studies in Banking and Financial Institutions. Professor Williams is Visiting Professor at the University of Turin, Italy, and Zhejiang University of Finance and Economics, China, and previously at the University of Malta.

Professor Williams' interests include competition and efficiency analysis in banking; the impact of financial liberalisation and financial deregulation on bank performance; ESG and corporate governance; executive compensation and behaviour; FinTech; and the impact of banking on the environment.
