Abstract
The UK government is exploring new rules on the use of AI in weapons systems, including autonomous weapons systems. In doing so, it has an opportunity to follow the USʼs lead, build a shared framework for allies and show moral leadership. Earlier this year, the UK Parliamentʼs Articial Intelligence in Weapons Systems Select Committee invited the public to give their view on the use of AI in weapons systems. The call for evidence is now closed, and Whitehall policymakers are working on new rules. In January 2023, the US Department of Defense (US DoD) updated its Directive 3000.09 on the use of autonomy in weapons systems. This update was a move in the right direction, since it nally addressed the use of AI in AWS and provided for a more detailed review process before elding and deploying such weapons. This document should serve as a starting point for the UKʼs regulation of AI and autonomy in weapons systems.
