Abstract
Apparitions (2012) Apparitions brings together a number of areas from the last seven years: first, a series of performances with harpist Rhodri Davies, and others with Mark Wastell and John Butcher (working with limited sample sets drawn from solo recordings of each performer, and a toy piano, combined with live sampling); second, exploring connections between generative procedures and improvisation (specifically the borders between loosening conscious control, deeper level unconscious control, and ‘random’ action); third, working with field recordings, both from an ideological and conventional ‘acoustic ecological’ perspective, as well as in more ‘phonographic’ ways, as a more purely musical celebration of aesthetic potency; finally, my primary interest – the relationship between aesthetic form, process, and consciousness. Apparitions is all these things and none of them.
