Abstract
A Soundscape for Mary Watts is a site specific immersive 25 minute 6 channel fixed media audio work created for the Watts Cemetery Chapel in Surrey, UK. The work focuses on the figure of the artist Mary Watts, who created the Mortuary Chapel with Architect George Tunstal Redmayne and the villagers of Compton between 1896 and 1901. Mary wrote extensive personal diaries, which offer a glimpse into the process of building the chapel, her relationship with painter George Watts, their social lives and beliefs. Recordings of published and unpublished excerpts from these diaries as well as transformations of the chapel bell and surrounding natural environment form part of the immersive soundscape created for the space.
