The NHS needs healthy and motivated staff to provide high-quality care, but nurses, midwives and paramedics have high rates of poor psychological health. High-pressure environments, with heavy workloads and staff shortages, are contributory factors, and conflicting priorities and tensions in the healthcare system can make it difficult to promote psychological wellness in staff. Researchers examined more than 200 research papers and reports to determine what causes poor psychological health in these groups and identified solutions, including improving working conditions, addressing blame culture, and shifting from individual interventions only to include a focus on system-level culture change.
