Abstract

Localized models are described for the softening of alpha -quartz by small amounts of water; a structure is described for the double kinks in a basal 60 degree dislocation, and the energy needed to produce them is estimated, as well as the migration energy. A calculation is performed on the energy of water bound to the kinks in the Griggs-Blacic-Frank and (4H)//S//i models.
