Abstract
24 May 1966–24 October, 2026.
Professor Malcolm von Schantz died unexpectedly in Brazil while attending the XVIII Latin American Symposium on Chronobiology in Maceió, Brazil.
Born in Sweden, Malcom obtained his degree and PhD at Lund University. Following two postdoctoral appointments in the United States (UCLA) and the United Kingdom (Imperial College with Russell Foster), Malcolm joined the Research Group of Prof Josephine Arendt at the University of Surrey as a Lecturer in 1997. He brought his molecular biology knowledge to the Surrey Chronobiology group at an exciting time when clock genes were being identified. Early pioneering work (MRC- and BBSRC-funded) with his postdoc Simon Archer (now Professor at Surrey) identified human clock gene polymorphisms (in PER1, PER2, PER3) that associated with chronotype and delayed sleep/wake syndrome. These findings added another important dimension to Surrey’s circadian and sleep research and had lasting international impact.
