Abstract
A study was conducted to investigate two acetabular component designs having the same press-fit geometry but varying in surface texture and hydroxyapatite (HA) application or none. Unilateral hip replacements were performed on 22 large dogs, wherein 9 dogs had porous-coated metal (PCA)-backed acetabular cups and 13 had madreporic-backed cups. Despite the different loading patterns and cancellous versus endosteal bone bed into which these cups are placed relative to the femoral systems, it appears that the application of HA is also advantageous in enhancing acetabular component stabilization. It also appears that the effect of the HA application is stronger than the influence of bead size on enhancing acetabular fixation.
