Abstract

Digital scanning Mechanical testing Reclaimed structural steel Reuse classification
This paper presents an integrated visual, geometric, and mechanical assessment framework in which reuse potential is governed by measured geometry. Reclaimed steel profiles from a demolition project were assessed through visual inspection, manual measurement, high‐resolution 3D scanning, and tensile and compression testing. Scan‐derived centroid translations and flange‐tip distortions were processed to define physically meaningful imperfection descriptors and incorporated into a code‐compatible analytical stability framework. The representativeness of partial measurements is addressed through a propagation parameter that brackets how measured distortions may influence behaviour over larger effective lengths. Buckling resistance is evaluated using modified code‐calibrated reduction curves, enabling direct comparison with standard design assumptions while preserving mechanical consistency. Based on combined geometric and mechanical evidence, a three‐tier classification, reuse as‐is, reuse‐modify, and recycle, is proposed. The results demonstrate that scan‐informed imperfection modelling provides a rational, stability‐led basis for structural steel reuse decisions.
