Abstract
Background: A number of anxiety models emphasize the importance of subjective control beliefs in the development and perpetuation of anxiety disorders. So far, the Anxiety Control Questionnaire (AxCQ) is the only questionnaire assessing perceived control in the context of experiencing anxiety. Objective: Examining the psychometric properties of a German translation of the AxCQ. Method: Evaluation of the AxCQ in a nonclinical and a clinical sample. Results: The AxCQ showed good reliability and evidence for convergent validity. However, results cast doubts on the questionnaire’s specificity for anxiety experiences. In line with prior studies using the original version of the AxCQ, no convincing factorial structure could be established. Conclusions: The AxCQ is potentially a useful addition to symptom-specific measurements of psychopathology, although further research is required, especially in regard to the latent structure of the questionnaire.
