Abstract
This thesis describes the theory of lattice dynamics in a generalised form. The theory is then applied more specifically to materials with hexagonal close-packed structure. In particular the phonon dispersion relations and the frequency spectra are calculated for Beryllium, Magnesium and Zinc using a Born von Karman model. The results from this model which includes a combination of central and angular forces out to third nearest meighbours are compared with previous experimental and theoretical results. Possible extensions of the model and its limitations are then discussed.
