Abstract
This thesis comprises a portfolio of theoretical writings and electro-acoustic compositions centred around an ecosystem comprising the acoustic piano, live electronic processing and amplification.
Can the piano become an acoustic version of the digital audio workstation? Is it possible to achieve the same sonic range and impact on the amplified acoustic piano that the laptop, synthesiser and sequencer deliver in live performance? Can the pianist become a human sequencer?
A set of five books bracketed by an Intro and Outro, - examining the themes concerning the instrument as an assemblage, acoustic electronic and pedagogical feedback loops, defining the acoustic audio workstation (AAW), interactions with electronic devices, and the machine as a teacher. These are represented by a central portfolio of scores, diagrams, and recordings comprising five EPs and one album, presented in digital and cassette format. These books are not numbered; they can be read and listened to in any order or individually.
