Abstract
Many new compounds of ruthenium(II) and ruthenium(III) have been prepared and investigated by infra-red, magnetic and other techniques. Ammonium and potassium tris(oxalato)ruthenate (III), obtained from the hydrated trichloride,have been established as convenient starting materials not only for the preparation of ethylenediamine complexes of rutheniUm(III)(69) but also for aniline complexes of ruthenium(III) and rutheniurn(II). Ruthenium(III) complexes of the type: [R][RuX4(substituted aniline)[2]] (R = K[+], Cs[+], Anilinium, (CH[3])[4]N[+] and X = 0.5(Ox[2-]), Cl[-], Br[-], I[-]), have been prepared and investigated. They are all paramagnetic with magnetic moments of about 2.1 B.M. at room temperature. Infra-red and far infra-red spectra have been used to make tentative distinctions between cis and trans structures. Diamagnetic ruthenium(Il) complexes of the type:-[Ru(substituted aniline[6]]X[2] and Ru(substituted aniline)[4]X[2] (X = Br[-]) have been made from the above ruthenium(III) complexes and from their visible and ultra-violet spectra, various ligand-field parameters have been calculated. Various diamagnetic complexes of ruthenium(Il) have been prepared with ligands containing -N=C-C=N- groups and compared with the analogous iron(ll) complexes. An attempt was made to prepare a number of amino-acid complexes of ruthenium(III), but the complex of picolinic acid, Ru(picolinic acid)[3].H[2]O, was the only pure compound obtained.
