Abstract
The theory and performance of all types of Single Phase motors in commercial use have been investigated in detail. Instead of treating each type of machine separately, as if it had nothing in common with other types, an attempt has been made to work out a general theory applicable to all types of a.c. machines, and each individual type is then treated as a particular case. Analytical theory is also given of machines in which the axes of the two stator windings are not in space guadrature, and to the best knowledge of the author, the analysis of Shaded Pole machines on this basis has not been given previously. Graphical, as well as algebraic, treatment of the different methods of starting Single Phase Induction motors is given. In each case, the best valued of the auxiliary circuit constants have been calculated, and the results verified experimentally. The characteristics of Commutator motors, both Series and Shunt, have been investigated and their possibilities as Universal motors discussed. The power factor improvement of Series motors and the speed regulation of Shunt motors have also been dealt with.
