Abstract
The integration of sustainability within higher education institutions (HEIs) is critical for fostering responsible citizenship and addressing global challenges. This dissertation examines effective ways for embedding sustainability into the organisational fabric of HEIs.
The primary aim of this research is, by drawing on an organisational change management framework, to identify key factors that facilitate the integration of sustainability practices in HEIs and to provide practical tools for sustainability practitioners.
A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a literature review, a qualitative study involving sustainability professionals across various institutions, and a handbook marrying theoretical concepts with practical tools.
The research identifies several effective change factors, including the importance of reflective practice, stakeholder engagement, and context-specific strategies for implementing holistic change towards sustainability.
The findings suggest that on an institutional level, there are three leverage points for change: driving engagement through assessment and reporting, fostering a shared understanding of sustainability, and embedding sustainability into the institutional framework. On an individual level, the findings emphasise the importance of the interplay between organisational knowledge and reflective practice, political savvy, and context specific change management. In this way, this dissertation contributes to the existing literature by highlighting overlooked areas and providing actionable insights for practitioners.
This dissertation advances knowledge in the field of sustainability in higher education and offers a framework for future research and practice. It underscores the need for continued exploration of effective change strategies.
