Abstract
The crystal structure of N-(3-bromopropyl)-phthalimide has been determined using three-dimensional methods and the heavy atom technique. The parameters have been refined to an R value of 11.9%. The molecule has been found to be largely planar in character, with the heterocyclic ring coplanar with the benzene ring. As this is a model compound for the polyimides, the planar bonding around the nitrogen atom in this compound may be expected to be typical of the bonding in the thermally stable polyimides. The chemistry of several derivatives of 1,4-dioxan is discussed, together with the possible configurations that these structures can adopt. The crystallography of two of these compounds has been investigated in detail. Attempts to determine the crystal structures of these compounds using Patterson and direct methods techniques, in three dimensions, are reported. These suggest that one derivative is 4,5,4',5'-tetrachlorobis-1,3-dioxolan-2-yl and that the other derivative is diethyl 1,4,5,8-tetraoxadecalin-2,3-dicarboxylate.
