Abstract
This submission consists of a diverse portfolio of electroacoustic works supported by a collection of theoretical writings. These writings - collated in Changes Over Time: Theory - include 1) M-Space and Expressive Contours – a paper on jazz improvisational modeling, analysis and technique 2) Time-feel – an extensive study of expressive microtiming in jazz and popular music and 3) Case Studies – a set of analyses employing the concepts defined in papers 1) and 2). The portfolio of compositional works comprises seven CDs and five DVDs, from which a representational selection is made (CD 2 Core Works). An extensive commentary on these works is provided in Changes Over
Time: Practice. The research in this portfolio is drawn from a range of sources including jazz pedagogical material, musicological literature, mathematical and biological models, digital audio analysis and practical application. This multi-disciplinary approach is required to better define, and deploy, the complex mechanics of jazz improvisational technique and time-feel.
