Abstract
The study is divided into two parts; Part I comprises the analytic of the determinant a of demand for accommodation away from home, end Part II comprises the forecast of such demand in the UK in 1980. Part I begins with an introduction and methodology, and explains why such a study may be useful to the accommodation industry and what techniques will be employed in its execution. This is followed by Chapter II, which defines the market covered by the study and, for the first time, quantifies the number of nights spent away from home in the UK by type of accommodation used, origin of visitor and purpose of visit. Chapter III contains an historical analysis of the determinants of demand for accommodation away from home, serving as a background to the present-day development with which this study is chiefly concerned and showing that the motivations of previous generations who travelled away from home are of relevance today. This is followed by an analysis of domestic demand for accommodation away from home, divided into three chapters according to purpose of visit; non-business demand (Chapter IV), business demand (Chapter V) and demand associated with attendance at conferences (Chapter VI). This is followed by three chapters analysing overseas demand for accommodation in the UK according to the same three purposes of visit (Chapters VII-IX). In each of these six chapters, the analysis identifies those variables, or determinants, which place an individual in the market for accommodation away from home, and which best explain his behaviour within that market. Part II comprises the forecasts after an introductory chapter setting out the assumptions on which the projections are based, each of the six sectors of the market are examined independently, and, on the basis of the relationships established in the demand analysis, demand for accommodation away from home in 1980 is derived. A final chapter collates the separate forecasts and examines the implications of the implied demand for the industry, and for those bodies with responsibilities for it.
