Abstract
The objective of this paper is to review the concept of continuing professional development (CPD) in physical therapy. Outcomes of CPD, evaluation models of CPD, and effectiveness of CPD in changing the practice behaviour of the physical therapist to enhance evidence based practice (EBP) are discussed. The evolution of continued medical education (CME) to CPD as well the importance of CPD in the field of physical therapy is outlined. The available outcome based evaluation models are compared and the need for such a model for evaluating effectiveness of CPD is recognized. A research gap is identified as to how CPD can enhance EBP by changing the practice behaviour of physical therapists.
