Abstract
We compared the decision strategies and cue use of experts and novices. The task was to decide which of two residential properties would be more likely to be burgled based on eight cues such as the location of the property. Participants were 36 imprisoned burglars that had committed residential burglary between 1-3,000 times (expert group 1), 36 police officers with 5-28 years of experience (expert group 2), and 36 University students that were not victims of residential burglary (novice group). Results showed that experts and novices differed in the strategies they used to make inferences and the cues they considered important for making such inferences.
