Abstract
Carrying capacity has been widely applied as a concept in tourism and recreation research since the 1960s, but its emergence can be traced to the 1930s. Recently, carrying capacity has been seen as a useful concept in respect to “overtourism,” a concern about the complex impacts of destinations exceeding their carrying capacity in social, economic, and environmental terms. The relationship between carrying capacity and overtourism has become particularly relevant in urban contexts (Vujičić et al. 2020).
